Welcome to the April edition of your Neighbourhood Policing Newsletter.
Our team continue to work hard to keep our community safe, connected, and informed.
Over the last month we have targeted your area priorities.
Below are details of a bike marking event we are hosting Millom, if you have a bike pop down. Its a effective way to help protect your bike from theft and improves the chances of it being returned.

Bike Marking
Save the date – bike marking
PCSO Claire from the Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) will be hosting a free bike marking event at Millom Tesco in the car park.
Bike marking is a quick, effective way to help protect your bike from theft and improve the chances of it being returned if it’s found.

Drop in anytime between 11am and 1pm — no appointment needed.

Vehicle seized Millom April
Vehicle seized — no insurance and provisional license
On 19 April, your Millom Community Beat Officers PC James Wrigley and PC Emily Tyson seized this vehicle, as the driver only had a provisional driving licence and wasn’t on the insurance for the vehicle.
The driver was reported for driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and driving a motor vehicle without insurance.
If you have information regarding vehicles being driven without the appropriate documents, then you can contact police on 101 or anonymously using Crimestoppers 0800555111.

Stalking awareness week
National Stalking Awareness Week – how to seek help and support
Public agencies across Cumbria are highlighting the support and advice available to people who may be suffering from stalking or harassment.
They are shining the spotlight on what people can do to seek help as the issue receives additional national focus in the form of a week of awareness this week.
Stalking or harassment is when someone repeatedly behaves in a way that makes people feel scared, distressed or threatened.
Drugs op
Police raids executed across north and west Cumbria to tackle suspected drugs crime
Police carried out nine raids across north and west Cumbria in the latest day of intensified action on drugs crime in the county.
Six arrests were made and suspected heroin, cocaine, amphetamine, MDMA and cannabis seized as officers were deployed in Carlisle, Cockermouth, Whitehaven and Workington.
Be Water Aware
Be Water Aware Week – 27 April to 3 May
It’s #BeWaterAware Week and we are supporting Cumbria Fire and Rescue’s campaign to raise awareness of the risks around water to help prevent accidental drowning.
Spending time by the water should be enjoyable – but it can be dangerous. Many accidental drownings are preventable.
If you get into difficulty in water
Float to Live:
- Tilt your head back, submerging your ears
- Relax and control your breathing
- Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
- Your legs may sink – that’s okay, everyone floats differently
- Practise floating at a supervised location like a swimming pool
If you see someone struggling in water
Phone, Tell, Throw:
- Phone 999 to get help
- Tell them to stay calm and float on their back
- Throw them something that floats until emergency services arrive
Do not enter the water yourself.

Millom visits
Community engagement
Over the past week PCSO Claire Lillico has been out and about meeting the locals of Millom and surrounding areas.
The kids on the park are always happy to chat, she’s had a history lesson whilst walking along Hodbarrow, and a quick stop off at Haverigg school at finishing time.
If anyone has anything they would like to chat about please don’t hesitate to give her a shout.

One team. One message. One goal.
Across Cumbria, sports clubs, coaches and athletes are coming together to take action against suicide. This is about looking out for your mates, starting conversations, and breaking the silence.

Our Priorities – You said, we did
Operation Colossus
Operation Colossus targeting road safety in hotspot areas continues as officers target activity in Millom.
Officers from Copeland Neighbourhood Policing team were stopping vehicles on Friday 10 April in the area carrying out checks on vehicles as well as providing road safety advice to drivers.
During the operation officers:
- Arrested two for theft following a traffic stop
- A driver was given a traffic offence report for no MOT
- Uplifted a vehicle under section 19 pace after stolen items were located
- Uplifted a vehicle for no tax
- Issued a driver with a traffic offence report (TOR) for contravening a red light
- Stopped two people and a vehicle under section 1 pace
Sergeant Lindsay Stuart from the Copeland Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Road safety is an issue that has been highlighted as an issue important to our communities in Millom.
“We continue to encourage anyone with concerns about anti-social driving or someone driving dangerously on our roads to report it.”
Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said: “Dangerous and anti-social driving is one of the key issues raised with me by residents so I’m pleased to see that the Police continue to tackle these concerns pro-actively.
“Operation Colossus is a snapshot of what Police do year-round to keep our roads safe and the message is clear: if you drive dangerously on Cumbria’s roads or our public spaces, you will be caught and you will face the consequences.
“As we head into summer, our roads will be getting busier so I would urge the public to drive safely and ensure that their vehicle is road legal. Let’s work together to protect Cumbria’s safety.”
Operation Colossus was launched after concerns were raised by communities of anti-social driving across Cumbria.

Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship
Did you know you can join Cumbria Constabulary as a degree apprentice and work towards a degree whilst serving as a student officer with active frontline duties?
Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP)
This is a two year programme which gives a blend of practical on-the-job experience and classroom-based learning. You will then go onto to your allocated station.
Professional Policing Degree Graduate (PPD)

Our Detective entry programme (PCEP DC) is open for applications. The two year programme is designed to equip you with all the skills and training necessary to ensure that on completion you will be a highly competent detective constable.
