1. Policy Statement
Millom Town Council aims to carry out all activities with environmental efficiency, actively seeking to protect and enhance the local environment and biodiversity within its area of operation whilst endeavouring to ensure wider adverse environmental impact does not occur as a result.
Millom Town Council is committed to protecting and enhancing biodiversity and nature. The biodiversity policy encourages habitat creation and restoration and helps create green corridors and greenspace networks.
2. Context
Millom Town Council will consider the impact its activities have on both climate change and biodiversity issues and will endeavour to introduce measures that either mitigate negative outcomes or actively support beneficial outcomes where practicable and affordable within available resources and financial capabilities.
Millom Town Council will specifically consider:
- The impact that operating its assets has on the environment
- The impact that goods and services it produces, including supplier environmental commitments
- Replacing environmentally inefficient assets with environmentally friendly alternatives where appropriate
- The impact that execution of council activities has on sustainability and environmental elements
3. Aims
Millom Town Council will aim to:
- Minimise consumption of resources used in operations, particularly buildings, equipment and administration
- Assess contractors’ and suppliers’ environmental policies and ensure they are reviewed and benchmarked against best practice
- Support local initiatives aimed at climate change and biodiversity protection or enhancement
4. Principles
Millom Town Council will:
- Lead by example and regularly improve sustainability standards
- Comply with relevant environmental legislation and regulations
- Promote walking, cycling through projects such as the Iron Line Project and encourage public transport use
- Use local sustainable products and services wherever possible
- Respect and protect natural resources through conservation and good management practices
These practices include:
- Improving energy efficiency such as low power street lighting and water efficiency measures
- Recycling and reusing waste materials where possible
- Avoiding unnecessary waste through responsible purchasing
- Preventing pollution and using environmentally sympathetic contractors and lighting solutions
- Reducing organic waste sent to landfill through composting
- Protecting architectural, historic features and waterways
- Encouraging wildlife through appropriate planting
- Encouraging members and employees to uphold environmental policy and procedures at all times
5. Review
This policy will be reviewed annually by Millom Town Council.
