Benefice of Millom – Proposed closure of Haverigg, St Luke’s
Thank you for your letter dated 18th April, which was circulated to Millom Town Councillors for information and discussion at their meeting held on 26th April. Concern was raised in regard to the possible sale of the church, and the council would like the diocese to take into consideration the views of the local people. Our Haverigg councillor informed us that a survey had been carried out, and the response had been lower than expected. On reflection and on talking to parishioners they stated that the questionnaire did not address the actual closure, only of what it was wanted for.
Following this the Town Council feel that another survey should be undertaken to get the parishioners proper views and only ask the question a) Do they want the Church to Close or b) do they want to keep the church open for christenings, weddings, funerals and other celebrations such as Harvest Festival, Christmas etc.
