This risk assessment covers general low-risk activities undertaken at the convenience and discretion of the individual.
It does not cover work involving hazardous machinery, hazardous substances, or lifting and handling of loads that could cause injury, which must be subject to separate specific risk assessments.
This assessment relates to lone working within the Town Council offices.
Employees must disclose any medical condition that could increase risk when working alone to their line manager and, where necessary, their GP.
Individuals assessed as being at increased risk must not work alone.
Anyone requiring assistance to exit the building in an emergency must not work alone.
Employees must comply with out-of-hours log-in and log-out procedures.
Contact arrangements should be established with staff members and family.
Only individuals fully competent and trained in emergency procedures may work alone outside normal hours.
Access to offices and meeting rooms is restricted to authorised individuals.
As the building is multi-agency, unauthorised access may occur. Employees should challenge individuals politely regarding permission to be in the building.
If confrontation occurs, the police should be contacted immediately.
Entrances near the building are well lit.
Employees should plan safe routes to vehicles or public transport and consider personal safety issues.
Use of a personal attack alarm should be considered.
Employees must be familiar with local fire and emergency response arrangements.
First aiders are unlikely to be present during lone working periods.
First aid boxes are available and maintained.
If unwell, employees should return home if possible or contact emergency services.
The building provides adequate heating, lighting, drinking water and toilet facilities.
Workstations must comply with Display Screen Equipment standards and assessments.
Employees should take regular breaks.
Regular inspections must ensure hazards such as damaged flooring or trailing cables are addressed promptly.
Individuals with temporary mobility impairment must not work alone.
All equipment must undergo electrical testing.
Cables and plugs should be visually checked for damage.
Employees must not interfere with electrical supplies.
Not covered under this assessment. Specific risk assessments are required.
Single-handed lifting of loads likely to cause injury is not permitted without specific risk assessment.
Subject to separate specific risk assessments and procedures.
Separate arrangements and assessments are required for lone working outside the office environment.
Provided the control measures outlined are applied, risks will be adequately controlled.
