1. Insulate pipes in cold places
Insulate water pipes in the loft, garage and outside areas. Your local DIY shop should have everything you need; remember to use waterproof lagging for any outside pipes, it isn’t expensive. Also, if you have an outside tap in the garden use an insulated tap cover to protect that from freezing too.
2. Find your stop tap
Knowing where your stop tap/stopcock is means you can turn your water off in an emergency, reducing any water damage to your home if a pipe bursts. It’s usually found under the kitchen sink, cellar or garage. Found it? Make sure it’s working. It’s also worth checking if your household insurance covers burst pipes.
3. Keep your heating on low
Keeping your central heating on low during a coldspell, or if you go away, will prevent your pipes from freezing. Lots of modern boilers have a frost setting – handy for when your central heating is not in full use.
