FUTURE POSITION OF HMP HAVERIGG
Thank you for your e-mail of 7 February sent to Lord Timpson, on behalf of Millom Town Council, where you were seeking reassurance that HMP Haverigg is not earmarked for closure.
This is in light of the recent announcement that the land west of HMP Haverigg has been identified as a suitable site for the development of a new Geological Disposal Facility (GDF).
I appreciate this announcement can lead to speculation regarding the future position of HMP Haverigg, which can be particularly unsettling for its workforce.
While the selected land in South Copeland is owned and managed by the Ministry of Justice as part of the prison estate, I can reassure you that the future position of HMP Haverigg will not be affected by the potential development of a new GDF.
